Biglaw Firm Going Viral For Its Political Leanings

One Biglaw firm gets right into the middle of the Democratic fight.

bernie-sanders-portrait-01Did you watch the Democratic debate on Sunday? Well, you were pretty much alone — sure, ratings for the Dem debate were up a bit for their latest tussle, but, come on, plopping a policy heavy/insult low debate in the middle of a three-day weekend was never going to set the world on fire. But recently the Bernie Sanders campaign did release a tidbit of information that was fascinating — at least to the Biglaw gadflies here at Above the Law.

On Sunday, the Sanders Facebook page posted an interesting graphic that has been making its way around the interweb, intended to demonstrate the difference between his campaign and the Hillary Clinton redux effort. In case you’ve been on a deserted island the last few months (or have decided to check out from all political news until Hillary inevitably wins the Democratic nomination), Bernie’s people are trying to demonstrate that Clinton is in the pockets of the big banks, while the Vermont socialist is the champion of the underdog. So, let’s take a look at the graphic:

Bernie Contributors List

What stands out? No, that isn’t a typo for Morgan Stanley (it’s the former NFL wide receiver who’s turned to political lobbying), but it is curious that the third largest Hillary contributor — larger than the top five Sanders contributors combined — is none other than Biglaw firm DLA Piper.

UPDATE (1/20/2016, 4:00 p.m.): Hmm — the Wikipedia entry for Stanley Morgan has been edited to remove any mention of political activity, so it’s not clear whether that’s a typo or not.

I guess it isn’t a complete shocker about DLA — law firms are known for their love of Hillary, but the firm has had a surge of contribution dollars in the last few months. That’s an awful lot of bonus money.
