If there has been one enduring symbol of the 2016 election, it is Donald Trump’s wall — the one he wants to build between the U.S. and Mexico, which he assures the public Mexico will pay for. Given the flippant way Trump speaks about the wall, it’s been too easy for his political opponents to dismiss the proposal without getting into the substance of the idea. In that vacuum, the myth of a “great Trump wall” has grown in the minds of his supporters and is being heralded as the candidate’s most concrete policy proposal.
There are just a few problems with that…
John Oliver breaks it all down. There are money issues — Trump’s ever-increasing budget for the project is woefully inadequate. There are practical issues — the wall is ill-equipped to prevent illegal immigration or the flow of drugs into the United States. There are legal issues — the lack of a federal buffer zone around the Texas/Mexico border means the land where a wall would be built is privately owned (cue the eminent domain music), not to mention the host of federal laws that would likely have to be waived for the project to be built.
