Lawyer Who Lied About His Mom Dying... Allegedly Lied Again TO THE SAME JUDGE

A lawyer caught in a pattern of lying may well have lied again -- at some point this is a disease, isn't it?

Lying law deanA lot of people will read this story and blame the lawyer for what appears to be a pattern of behavior that is both unethical and downright contemptuous. That would be a mistake. This just can’t be a guy in control of his faculties — this is something pathological and the man needs help, right?

How else can you explain a lawyer who got caught lying to a federal judge — an hour before opening statements — that he needed an extension because his mother had died, despite her being very much alive, going back to the exact same judge and, apparently, lying again? To delay the sanctions hearing for the initial falsehood! This is like some reverse version of Liar, Liar.

Attorney John Nonnenmacher, seeking to postpone the sanctions hearing, told Judge Allyne Ross that he was unable to make it because he was admitted to a New Jersey hospital…

Unfortunately for lawyer John Nonnenmacher, the judge called Morristown Medical Center this week to check out the story and hospital reps said he wasn’t there, court papers show.

“A representative of Morristown Medical Center stated that no one with the last name Nonnenmacher is a patient at the facility,” Brooklyn Judge Allyne R. Ross wrote in ordering the lawyer to “advise the court of his whereabouts.”

See, when you’ve already lied to someone to secure a delay they’re understandably a lot more suspicious the next time you ask for a postponement (according to reports, he’d independently used the excuse of an uncle’s death). There’s a whole fairy tale about this phenomenon that ends with the subject eaten by a wolf. I think it’s called, “Little Miss Muffet.” The point is, you can’t keep lying to the same audience and expect them to buy it.

Maybe that’s the most genius fantastical excuse of all. Caught in an indefensible misstatement, maybe the plan is to push it so far that he can seek mercy for a psychological condition? That would be some next-level s**t right there.

Nonnenmacher’s had a rough go of it since a hit-and-run incident back in November:

Nonnemacher’s vehicle apparently ran off the roadway, struck a hydrant and knocked it off its base, police said. Nonnemacher then left the scene of the crash but pieces of his vehicle were left behind including a part that contained a tag with the Vehicle Identification Number.

When police were able to contact him, Nonnenmacher told them he swerved to avoid hitting squirrels in the roadway. He also allegedly said he knew he hit something but he didn’t know he hit a fire hydrant.

Nonnenmacher is — assuming his dog, cat, wife, cousin, best friend, and great aunt all survived the weekend; his back, ankle, wrist, and spleen are all in tip-top shape; and he made the commute without incident — facing the music in Judge Ross’s courtroom this morning.
