Which Firms Give In-House Counsel Nightmares? (2017)

What is it about these firms that strikes fear in the hearts of GCs?

Getting ready for the upcoming battleWhat firms do general counsels absolutely, positively not want to face in court? Answering that question is the motivation behind a survey from BTI Consulting Group. They asked 300 general counsels in a free form question which law firms they would least like to see as opposing counsel and compiled their “Fearsome Foursome” list.

So who made the cut this year (in alphabetical order)?

Dentons
Jones Day
Kirkland & Ellis
Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom

Congratulations on your fierceness.

According to Law360 (sub. req.), turning up on this list is old hat for Jones Day, Kirkland, and Skadden, but brand new territory for Dentons. The addition of Dentons in the “Fearsome Foursome” means Quinn Emanuel lost its seat on this high-powered train.

So what is it about these firms that strikes fear in the hearts of GCs? According to Michael Rynowecer, CEO of BTI Consulting Group, they just don’t give up:

General counsels who responded to the survey pointed to a few things that the four firms named most-feared in the courtroom have in common, the first of which is an unrelenting approach, Rynowecer said.

“They have several strategies in place at once and keep coming at the issue,” he said. “Not only do they overturn every rock, but they find new rocks to overturn and keep coming up with new ways to act in their clients’ interests.”

Congrats to these hard working firms, and good luck to those that oppose them.
