
This past Wednesday was, of course, International Women’s Day, dedicated to “celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.” To help mark the occasion, the Boston Globe published a chart detailing the gender proportions of all professions for which the U.S. Department of Labor keeps data.
Topping the chart are “preschool and kindergarten teachers,” with 97.5% women. At the bottom are “heavy vehicle and mobile equipment service technicians and mechanics,” with 0.5% women. With 35.7% women, “lawyers” are tied with “emergency medical technicians and paramedics” and “computer systems analysts” in the bottom reaches of the middle third of the 359 profession tracked.
