Who Is The Worst-Behaved (Former) Biglaw Attorney?

Enjoy our Lawyers Behaving Badly Bracket.

March-Madness-logo-Above-the-Law-ATL11It’s March Madness time! Instead of forcing our readers to pretend to know the difference between the Southern and Southland conferences or the MAC and MEAC conferences, we are going to focus on the two things we know best: Biglaw and scandals.

For this year’s March Madness, we’ve set up a bracket of Biglaw attorneys who have gotten in some pretty big trouble. Many of them have served (or are serving) time in jail for their deeds, others are awaiting trial, and others many have gotten away with only a mea culpa to a state bar association — but they all know what it is like to suddenly find their legal careers in jeopardy.

Today we are revealing (and opening up the voting for) the first two regions in our Lawyers Behaving Badly Bracket. Check us out later in the week for the full bracket.

Behaving Badly Day 1

In the first half of the Al Capone, or learn how to do your taxes, region, we have #1 seed Keila Ravelo, accused of embezzling $7.8 million from her former firms and not paying proper taxes on it, against a #4 seed that served three months for his crime.

# 1 Seed Name: Keila Ravelo
(Former) Firms: Willkie Farr and Hunton & Williams
Legal Speciality: Antitrust Partner
Misdeeds: Ravelo, along with her husband, was initially indicted on charges of wire fraud and embezzlement for allegedly creating dummy corporations to funnel “legal consulting fees” (for work never done) from both of her former firms. The indictment was later updated to include charges of tax evasion and using fake billings to funnel the allegedly fraudulently obtained $7.8 million in litigation support fees. She is scheduled to go to trial later this year.
Why you should vote for her: “It’s too bad that what allegedly made Ravelo ‘happy and fulfilled’ was embezzling money from her firm.”

Jeff Galloway

Jeff Galloway

# 4 Seed Name: Jeff Galloway
(Former) Firm: Hughes Hubbard
Legal Speciality: Intellectual Property and Products Liability Partner
Misdeeds: Pleaded guilty to one felony count of criminal tax fraud. According to the terms of the deal, he had to pay $600,000 in taxes, resign from the bar, and serve three months in jail.
Why you should vote for him: “He’s one smart cookie, with degrees from M.I.T. (bachelor’s in engineering), Stanford (master’s in engineering), and Columbia (law).
Smart enough to follow the tax laws? Apparently not. But in fairness to Galloway, he’s not the first Biglaw partner to run into trouble on this front.”

Who should advance to the Elite Eight?

  • # 1 Seed Keila Ravelo (92%, 546 Votes)
  • # 4 Seed Jeff Galloway (8%, 49 Votes)

Total Voters: 595

In the other half of the Al Capone region, the 2 versus 3 seeds pit two former Biglaw partners who were both sentenced to time in prison for not knowing how to fill out their taxes.

John O'Brien

# 2 Seed Name: John O’Brien
(Former) Firm: Sullivan & Cromwell
Legal Speciality: Corporate Partner
Misdeeds: Sentenced to over two years in prison for failure to file taxes relating to $9.2 million in partnership income.
Why should you vote for him: “First, and most obviously, one would expect a corporate partner at a top-tier firm to know a lot about — and follow — the law. Second, Biglaw partners usually receive a great deal of assistance in preparing their tax returns from the administrative / accounting staff at their firms (especially since they must file in all jurisdictions where the partnership does business).”

Ted Freedman

Ted Freedman

# 3 Seed Name: Ted Freedman
(Former) Firm: Kirkland & Ellis
Legal Speciality: Bankruptcy and Restructuring Partner
Misdeeds: Sentenced to one year in prison for failing to report $2.4 million in income.
Why you should vote for him: “Partners at K&E — at least equity or ‘share’ partners, as opposed to ‘non-share’ partners — earn buckets of cash. Would one of them really risk criminal liability in order to save an extra million?”

Who should advance to the Elite Eight?

  • # 2 Seed John O'Brien (84%, 479 Votes)
  • # 3 Seed Ted Freedman (16%, 89 Votes)

Total Voters: 568
