Let's Eat Kugel For Charity!

It's not the standard charity cookoff, but the evening promises some interesting takes on the dish.

Honestly, kugel isn’t the standard subject of a celebrity charity cookoff. This is the well-worn domain of 5-alarm chilis or slow-cooked briskets. But in some Jewish communities, owning a blue ribbon kugel is a pretty big deal and, hey, there’s nothing wrong with a solid noodle casserole. And this event promises some, dare we say, “unorthodox” takes on the dish.

Tzedek DC, a Washington legal group committed to helping people with debt, is hosting a celebrity kugel cookoff on September 25 at the UDC Student Center. Five D.C. chefs — Michael Friedman of Red Hen and All Purpose; Kyle Bailey of The Salt Line; Alex Levin of The Schlow Restaurant Group; Danny Lee of Mandu and Chiko; and Pati Jinich of Pati’s Mexican Table — will bring their unique approaches to the event. CNN’s David Gregory and award-winning cookbook author Joan Nathan join Marna Tucker of Feldesman Tucker and UDC’s Annamaria Steward (just off her tenure as DC Bar president) to judge.

If you’re interested in some bold and interesting takes on a traditional dish and want to help out a charity aiding people afflicted with debt, go get your tickets, available here.
