There is always a story behind much of what we do in Asia, whether its one of our many US attorney placements in the region over the past 9 years (every placement and also placements that don’t happen are individual stories, a learning experience, and relationship building experiences), or simply getting chosen for a fantastic in-house search. In this case, the back story is that one of the members of the Kinney Recruiting team placed this tech company’s General Counsel at a top US firm in Hong Kong some years ago. As we always say at Kinney, this is a relationship business more than anything else. We are very proud of our past US associate placements in Asia, folks we have been friends with over the years, who are now graduating to equity partner and general counsel roles in the region.

The candidate for this fantastic role in Singapore could come from Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Singapore, Tokyo, or major western big law markets, such as New York, London or others. This company is going to be very selective in this search. The critical requirement is top Wall Street firm New York quality M&A experience. The candidate will need to demonstrate that they can handle complex transactions, manage outside counsel in multiple foreign jurisdictions, meet high demanding deadlines and negotiate against sophisticated parties with a high degree of professionalism. No personal connection to Singapore is required, but obviously the new hire will need to convince that they are committed to Singapore and SE Asia for the long-term.

We get asked to take on in-house searches multiple teams on a weekly basis in Asia. We turn down most of these requests, for various reasons. This particular search in Singapore we are excited about because of the quality of candidates sought, the comp package and most importantly the opportunity it presents for the new hire.

If you are more interested in lateraling to a top US law firm in Hong Kong or Singapore, and looking for an English only is ok US associate spot, we have plenty of those available too, including at top tier firms.
