Insider Reviews

It’s still Big Law (i.e. billable hours and crazy client demands), but there is a truth to the Firm’s reputation in terms of culture. With a few exceptions, it’s a bunch of intelligent people who don’t take themselves too seriously and are actually considerate of work/like concerns.

Really a great group of people. I am in the SF office and I really like the people I work with. No yelling, no absurd deadlines or fire drills, just a very humane place to work. People are very understanding and accommodating, though of course at the same time, it is biglaw and you are expected to work hard. I think this is all a function of the firm’s culture, the fact that is based in SF, and the size of my group.

I’m very happy with the firm, my colleagues, and the quality of the work, which is top-notch high profile stuff. The hours can be a bit brutal, and I think there could be some improvement in how workflow is handled with more junior associates. As a senior, I am given as much responsibility as I want, and I think the firm is pretty straightforward on partnership prospects. I don’t think partnership is an impossible goal here. Bonuses have been mixed, but in the years where I’ve billed above 2000 hours and done good work, I’ve always matched or beat market. I prefer it to lockstep.

The real estate groups of Mofo are perpetually overworked and understaffed. Tokyo has had a complete collapse of their associate team with no US associates left.

Don’t believe the self-congratulatory hype – it’s just like everywhere else. Sometimes worse, because the firm is so smugly certain of its self-asserted progressive qualities that it is often blind to serious problems within its own ranks. They will churn and burn you like anywhere else – they just will act like they’re not doing it while they do it.
