That’s right, R. Laurence Macon is a litigation partner at Akin Gump, and he ran 113 marathons in a year. From Yahoo Sports:
At 67, he is hardly a speed demon, with his fastest time clocking in at 4 hours, 45 minutes. The marathons have not affected his work at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer and Feld in San Antonio. Macon once conducted a conference call while running.
Macon doesn’t consider himself a great athlete; just a guy who puts one foot in front of another. While he hopes to be an inspiration for middle-aged people to exercise, the feat started after he bragged to several lawyers.
Running a hundred marathons is a pretty good metaphor for making partner, and staying partner, at a Biglaw firm. You run, and you run, and you pee on yourself, and you run, and it doesn’t matter how fast you finish as long as you keep putting in those miles — and at the end of fifty marathons, you make partner! And then you start running another fifty marathons. Yay!
LexisNexis Practical Guidance Rolls Out Dedicated Practice Area for AI & Technology
The new generation of AI-related legal issues are inherently cross-disciplinary, implicating corporate law, intellectual property, data privacy, employment, corporate governance and regulatory compliance.
And if you are really lucky, you’ll be able to take a conference call while you are engaged in your hobby.
In any event, good luck to these two lawyer athletes, as well as all the lawyers out there staying in shape despite having very sedentary jobs. I’ve got to run to the bodega and stock up on Twinkies before they run out.
