Another Market Bumps Up Associate Salaries

Is everyone getting raises EXCEPT the New York market?

Another big increase in associate salaries! As long as you don’t live in New York, that is. After Pennsylvania firms underwent a round of associate salary increases in the Spring, the action moved to the Pacific Northwest, where Perkins Coie upped the ante and Stoel Rives followed close behind. As Yoda put it, “Begun, the Northwest Salary Wars have.”

And yet, when we reported on the salary boost at Stoel Rives, we noted that the firm’s Portland office was left in the cold. Well, that’s all over with news that a major player in Oregon just gave its associates the gift that keeps on giving… in small amounts biweekly throughout the next year.

Davis Wright Tremaine really “put a bird” on the market by pushing its Portland salaries from $110,000 to $120,000 next year. This places the firm a smidgen ahead of Stoel Rives and Perkins Coie, who both paid their Portland first-years $115,000 this year. Will this set off a Portland front in the Northwest Salary War? Time will tell.

It’s worth noting that while moving first years up to $120K is newsworthy in and of itself, it wasn’t just the whippersnappers cashing in. In fact, the eighth-years saw the biggest jump — a 13 percent increase — from $150K to $169K. That should buy a lot of artisanal hemp paperweights or whatever the hell Portland people buy these days.

Congrats to Davis Wright Tremaine associates and good luck to the rest of the Portland market.
