O.J. Whispered ‘You Were Right’ After His Acquittal

O.J. Simpson knew who was right...

220px-O.J._Simpson_1990_·_DN-ST-91-03444_cropAs we continue to bask in the nostalgia-fueled glow of The People vs. O.J. Simpson, a key player in the trial now reveals O.J.’s whispered words moments after the trial.

While this would be a truly epic story if the now-jailed star leaned into Marcia Clark or Chris Darden for this nugget, he actually shared these words with Robert Shapiro, the LegalZoom founder who served as the head of O.J.’s defense team… before sliding down the bench. Shapiro shared this with Fox’s Megyn Kelly in what would have been a marquee interview if she wasn’t later sitting down with former nemesis Donald Trump. He also explained that he thought there were two assailants in the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman, which is a curious theory because I didn’t see any of that in If I Did It (affiliate link), but I think we all need to know where Kato Kaelin is right now.

Shapiro also shared he knew the infamous glove wouldn’t fit because he’d already tried it on and takes credit for urging O.J. to ham up the failed effort to try on the glove for the jury. If true, this is a pretty significant contribution to the trial for Shapiro. Hm. This seems like a pretty easy claim to make now that Johnny’s dead. Just sayin’.

Perhaps most fascinating is the fact that this is Shapiro’s first interview in nearly 20 years. For a lawyer knocked as an inveterate publicity hound in the early 90s, that he became such a recluse after this case says something about the professional trauma it must have inflicted. Speaking of professional trauma, Shapiro offered no thoughts on his feelings after seeing John Travolta portray him as a headline-grabbing blowhard with all the intensity of a high school production, but one must assume he was just glad Travolta tried just that little bit harder than he did in Battlefield Earth.

The entire interview aired last night, so it’s not yet available at The Kelly File website, but keep your eye out.
