A Biglaw Behemoth's Weak-Sauce Raise
First-year associates get $180K, but only in certain offices; pay for more-senior associates remains TBD; and the raise doesn't happen until September.
K&L GATES — MEMORANDUM — ASSOCIATE SALARY ADJUSTMENTS
To: All US Lawyers
Law Firm Business Development Is More Than Relationship Building
In response to compensation movements in the market, we will be increasing first year associate salaries in our ten US offices that are currently on the New York market pay scale from $160,000 to $180,000. These ten offices are Boston, New York, Washington DC, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, San Francisco, Palo Alto, Los Angeles, and Orange County. We will also be increasing salaries in these offices for second through eighth year associates. The amounts of those increases are still being determined and will vary (a) based on the local market conditions in each office, and (b) by individual as a result of our pay for performance compensation approach. After the amounts of the increases are confirmed they will be communicated on an individual basis by the administrative partners in each office.
We are continuing to review the associate salary structure in our other US offices and will announce any additional increases shortly. All salary increases will be effective September 19th, the arrival date of most of our incoming first year associates. We will notify individuals of their compensation adjustments in advance of this date.
Thanks very much.
