Congratulations to all the firms on the list!

holding a glowing earth globe in his hands. Earth image providedThe world keeps on getting more and more interconnected, and law firms that are able to smoothly navigate those international waters are extremely valuable. Cross-border legal work is complex, and the firms that do it well deserve recognition.

Law360 has announced their list of the top 20 global law firms. Their methodology, described below, attempts to find the firms that are truly able to compete in the international legal market:

Firms are ranked based on five factors: the percentage of the firm’s attorneys located outside its home country; the number of offices outside the firm’s home country; the number of countries where the firm has at least one office; the practice area breadth of the firm’s cross-border and international work; and the size and complexity of the firm’s cross-border and international work.

The firms that make this year’s cut are:

1. Allen & Overy
2. DLA Piper
3. White & Case
4. Freshfields
5. Norton Rose Fulbright
6. Hogan Lovells
7. Baker & McKenzie
8. Squire Patton Boggs
9. Shearman & Sterling
10. Skadden
11. Dentons
12. Herbert Smith
13. K&L Gates
14. Cleary Gottlieb
15. Dechert
16. Paul Hastings
17. Reed Smith
18. Mayer Brown
19. Gibson Dunn
20. Orrick

These firms combined have offices in 227 cities around the word, and every single one has offices in New York, London, Paris, Hong Kong and Beijing. And most of them know how to compete for the best talent in New York — all the firms but five (Norton Rose Fulbright, Squire Patton Boggs, Dentons, Herbert Smith, and Reed Smith) have already raised the salaries of those associates to the recently announced $180K scale.

Congratulations to all the firms on the list!
