Lawyerly Lairs: Columbia Law Grad Seeks Dishwasher, Washer-Dryer

Finding a decent apartment in New York City takes tenacity, as one Columbia Law grad learned.

A few blocks south, Caroline Turner came across another possibility: a sublet in Ageloff Towers, a 1929 co-op building at 141 East 3rd Street and Avenue A. I scoped this building out as well, and I found it quite impressive:

Ageloff Towers - 141 East 3rd Street 3

Ageloff Towers - 141 East 3rd Street 2

Ageloff Towers - 141 East 3rd Street 1

But it didn’t work for Turner. At $3,700 a month, it was over her budget. While the apartment was spacious, about twice the size of the other places she viewed, it wasn’t worth it to her: “I am not going to be in it enough to really justify getting a much bigger apartment.” She also worried about delays from the need for co-op board approval and whether she would be able to renew the lease (given the limits imposed by some co-ops on rentals).

At this point, Turner started to get discouraged. “It seemed the same kind of thing over and over,” she told the Times.

But don’t count this young lawyer out just yet….
