Biglaw Firm Sponsoring PGA Golfer

Which law firm would have sponsored Happy Gilmore?

golf caddyCozen O’Connor announced that it will be sponsoring PGA golfer William McGirt effective January 1. As reported by Bloomberg BNA’s Big Law Business, this isn’t the first time a golfer has sported a law firm logo — Thompson & Knight sponsored Harrison Frazar back in 2005 — but this deal nets Cozen some top-flight visibility with the 37-year-old McGirt, who won a PGA tournament last summer.

At all PGA tour events, with the exception of the Ryder Cup and The Presidents Cup, McGirt will wear the Cozen logo on his left chest.

In addition, Cozen is entitled to two corporate events per year, where Cozen lawyers and clients can tee off and get pointers from the golf pro, as well as a number of meet and greets throughout the year at PGA tournaments.

Enjoy your summer outing, Cozen-bound 2Ls!

Is this the future of Biglaw advertising? Might we soon attend a game at King & Spalding Field or rooting on NASCAR’s #36 Jones Day car? Well, it’s worth noting that the PGA attracts a genteel class of sponsors like KPMG or the NYSE, institutions that routinely rub elbows with, and more importantly engage, Biglaw firms. Biglaw may rely less and less on the old boy networks of old when it comes to getting business, but they still have a natural home with the country club set.

Except the Jones Day car. That’s absolutely the redneck audience they’ve sold out their brand for, and they should get on the phone to coax Carl Edwards out of retirement immediately.
