He was a longtime Biglaw partner, and she was a prominent judge.

Chief Judge Judith S. Kaye

You wouldn’t be surprised to learn that Judge Judy owns (or owned) a multimillion-dollar Manhattan apartment. After all, Her Honor is America’s highest-paid television star.

But let’s talk about a different Judge Judy — the late, great Judith S. Kaye, who served as Chief Judge of the State of New York from 1993 to 2008 (the first woman to hold the post). Given all the years that Chief Judge Kaye spent in government service, which is not as lucrative as having a long-running, wildly popular TV show, would you be surprised to know that Judge Kaye lived in a luxury co-op apartment that recently sold for $4.25 million?

If you know a bit more about Judge Kaye, however, this information becomes less surprising. Before and after her judicial service, she worked in private practice, at leading law firms like Sullivan & Cromwell and Skadden Arps. It was at S&C that she met her future husband — litigator Stephen Kaye, who enjoyed a long and successful legal career of his own before passing away in 2006. He practiced at the powerhouse firm of Proskauer Rose for more than 40 years, which is more than enough time to build up a very nice nest egg.

The sale of the Kayes’ former home, unit 5A at 101 Central Park West, was reported last weekend by the New York Times. We located the listing, so it’s time for an in-camera inspection of this lavish Lawyerly Lair….
