To celebrate March Madness — without any sports knowledge required — we here at Above the Law have decided to determine who is the absolute, very worst in Biglaw. And boy, do we have some doozies in the bracket. The Final 4 consists entirely of Biglaw partners; I guess the bigger they are, the harder they fall.
The first matchup features Keila Ravelo versus Jeffrey Wertkin — two Biglaw partners that have yet to be tried for their alleged crimes. If you’ve been voting in the earlier rounds, you’re familiar with their (alleged) work. Both of them are accused of using their roles for their own personal benefit. Ravelo allegedly embezzled millions from not one but two Biglaw firms, through phony litigation support bills from a company owned by her and her husband. Wertkin supposedly took a whistleblower complaint he had access to from his previous job at the DOJ and tried to sell it back to the target company. He was arrested while trying to make the sale, while wearing a wig.

The second matchup features ex-Biglaw partner Edward De Sear, who is serving time for sex trafficking of a minor and child pornography. There is really nothing I can even conceive of that would be worse than that, but perhaps the distance between De Sear’s crimes and his work as a lawyer gives some justification to not advance him to the final. Sarah Buffett’s meltdown at 20,000 feet was truly epic and caused her flight to be diverted.
