Law Schools Duel For The Worst Bar Exam Passage Rates Ever

Yikes! This is pretty bad.

ELON UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF LAW — EMAIL FROM DEAN LUKE BIERMAN — FEBRUARY 2017 BAR EXAM RESULTS

Dear Elon Law Alumni:

I want to report to you that the results of the February 2017 NC bar exam have been posted. Please join me in congratulating our graduates who passed the exam, who will very soon be practicing attorneys in North Carolina.

And to those who did not fare as well, join me in offering Elon Law’s unwavering support with significant opportunities for guidance and additional preparation.

The overall pass rate for the test is 36.73%. NC law school first-time takers passed the exam at the rate of 32.46% and NC law school repeat-takers passed the exam at the rate of 33.21% for an overall 32.98% pass rate for NC law school takers.

Elon Law’s pass rates are below statewide results and can be seen on the attached summary published by the NC Board of Law Examiners. Our overall pass rate is ahead of Charlotte’s 21.08% and is just off NC Central’s 27.03% with the other 4 NC law schools having overall pass rates between 41.18% and 65%.

We are examining outcomes from this administration of the bar exam to understand individual results better. The Academic and Bar Support team has made significant adjustments to their program and will continue to do so. Likewise, the bar exam results will be on the faculty’s agenda for its next meeting in April. We continue our commitment to offer as much assistance as possible to help Elon Law students and graduates succeed in their professional goals, including success on the bar exam.

To those graduates who may need more time and support or other guidance, please know that the Academic and Bar Support team is at the ready to provide counsel and assistance; I encourage you to take advantage of the additional resources that remain available to you.

Thank you for all you do in supporting Elon Law.

Luke Bierman
Dean and Professor of Law
