[Don McGahn] is a cancer who has done much to undermine anticorruption mechanisms in this country… He drove the federal election commission into a ditch to undermine our election laws. He did a direct assault on the ethics program and now we’re learning he attacked the Department of Justice.

—Walter Shaub, former director of the U.S. Office of Government Ethics, appearing on CNN to give his blunt take on Don McGahn’s tenure as White House Counsel. Shaub was responding to recent reports that the president asked McGahn to convince AG Jeff Sessions to not recuse himself from leading the Department of Justice’s investigation into the Trump campaign. Shaub also argued special prosecutor Robert Mueller should look into obstruction charges against McGahn, saying McGahn “is in over his head in the job and I question whether he’s got the character he needs to be able to do that.”
