The origin of a legal industry term we all take for granted.

Answer: Emory Buckner of Root Clark, which eventually became Dewey & LeBoeuf, which eventually became an epic disaster. Buckner was a big proponent of giving younger lawyers more responsibility, and this shift in terminology conveyed more authority on the part of young lawyers than the prior term “law clerk.”
