The Law Firms With The Hottest Appellate Practice (2018)

Congratulations to all the hard working lawyers recognized.

Trial work might be the form of litigation that most non-lawyers recognize, but those in the profession recognize the essential work that an appellate practice does. So in acknowledgement of the hard work of appellate lawyers, ALM puts together a yearly “Hot List” of the best appellate and Supreme Court practices.

There are a lot of big-name firms with prominent attorneys on the list. But when the top appellate litigators were asked what advice they’d give to their younger selves, they say to focus not on the academic or clever, but on the practical. Kirkland & Ellis’s Paul Clement says, “Common sense beats a footnote every time.” While Munger, Tolles & Olson’s Don Verrilli says, “Focus on what’s right and true, not what’s clever and shrewd.” And Shay Dvoretzky, partner at Jones Day, says to eschew flowery language and to, “Write in plain English.”

The 22 law firms, in alphabetical order, with the best of the best appellate practices for 2018:
