ATL Holiday Card Contest: The Finalists! (2018)
Which of these law firm holiday cards is the best of 2018? Cast your vote!
Winter is on Friday, and with Hanukkah behind us, Christmas nearly upon us, and everyone in the legal profession ready to ring in the New Year, it’s time to reveal the 10 finalists for our tenth annual holiday card contest. But first let’s give shout-outs to some honorable mentions (click on each firm’s name to see its card):
1. Fish & Richardson: From the nominator: “The card celebrates thinkers who turn their ideas into reality, which is the core of an intellectual property practice and sends a warm greeting for holiday wishes that come true.” Plus, it gives a shout-out to Space Camp, and over the course of the past 20 years, Fish & Richardson has sent over 500 students to Space Camp on full scholarships. Dare to dream, kids!
2. Morse Barnes-Brown Pendleton: How could you possibly go wrong with 12 dessert recipes on a holiday card? “Our whole team (from lawyers to staff to paralegals) loves sweet treats, so we challenged our employees to share their favorite holiday dessert recipes and the outcome was pretty delicious.” Hurry up and start baking and give your compliments to all of the chefs at MBBP!

3. Troutman Sanders: You may wonder how the holiday season as we know it today came to be, and this firm has you covered with this year’s holiday card featuring “innovation milestones in the form of holiday trends.” From rolling luggage to “Festivus,” this card’s got something for everyone.
And now, the 10 finalists, in alphabetical order. Again, click on each firm’s name to view its card. Please note that most of these cards have SOUND, so you might want to turn your sound off or down, or use headphones. Explanatory comments come from firm representatives unless otherwise indicated.
1. Davis Wright Tremaine: The internet is obsessed with quick recipie videos, and this Biglaw firm took that to heart with its holiday card. They’ve gathered eight holiday recipes from lawyers and staff across all offices and created quickie how-to videos for each one. Thanks to DWT’s Practice Management Specialist in Bellevue, I know what I’ll be making for my family on Christmas morning.
2. Goodman Allen Donnelly: This card features original artwork created by Michael Goodman, one of the firm’s founding partners, who says, “While we continue to look for the elusive peace on earth and goodwill toward women, we figure that the holiday spirit has to start with Santa, include a cohort of reindeer, an occasional elf, at least one spinning dreidel and a hint of current events.” And with Santa under investigation by the FBI for all sorts of crimes in this animated card, we know you’re going to love it.

3. Grodsky & Olecki: Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg dominated the headlines in 2018, and Her Honor also dominates this firm’s holiday card. Can you complete the RBG workout? The litigators at this firm can, and they hope you have a Remarkable, Bright, and Glorious new year! Very well done. A card the Notorious One could truly appreciate!
4. Harness Dickey: This firm received an honorable mention in last year’s card contest, but they’ve really stepped up their game this time around. Toy production is behind at the North Pole because of infringement lawsuits and injunctions, but luckily, this IP firm is here to help out. “With a fistful of patents and his half-empty sack, Santa went to the lawyers who he knew had his back.” Luckily, IP comes alive at Harness Dickey, so the firm was able to save the day. Hooray!
5. Lane Powell: This is a great card if only because it’s so sweet and sincere, and features so many lawyers from the firms telling the world exactly why they love the holiday season. Our nominator likes this card because it’s warm, it’s authentic, and it’s polished. I love this card because of the guy who interrupts all of the charming chatter to announce that his favorite thing about the holidays is whiskey.
6. Larson King: This is the fifth time that Larson King has been featured as a finalist in our holiday card contest. Maybe the fifth time will be the charm for this St. Paul-based litigation boutique? All the illustrations in this “Flake News” special report were hand-drawn and then animated. How could you not love a holiday card that features Robert Mueller as Special Investigator Claus who’s dealing with “North Pole collusion” in the reindeer games? Plus, we totally appreciated the firm’s dig at Biglaw: “Biglaw will staff cases efficiently and reduce their rates? Ugh, sorry, that’s fake news.”
7. O’Melveny: Here’s another card from a Biglaw firm that really humanizes the lawyers who work there. “We wanted to give folks a sense of O’Melveny’s unique culture,” says the firm’s Director of Business Development. Featuring little clips of lawyers and partners talking about the holidays, you can tell that the firm’s culture really is “one that’s light-hearted, open, a little bit nerdy.” That being said, pie really is the most superior dessert, and everyone wants to eat a lot and not gain a lot of weight.

8. Parry & Pfau: If you can make it through all of the fake laughter in this video, then you’re the winner of this year’s contest, ha ha ha ha. Here’s a summary from Zach Parry, one of the partners at the firm: “Parry & Pfau’s video has seven shades of laughter, a stunt double, animal actors, a Morgan-Freeman soundalike voiceover, elf jokes, a clumsy Christmas tree, and lots of holiday cheer. But some people still vote for the same old boring holiday card every year. Those same people probably also like being in an elevator full of people who use cheap soap, dipping tortilla chips in salsa mass-produced in New York City, and eating peanut-butter sandwiches without milk. But for everyone else, there’s Parry & Pfau’s Christmas video card.”
9. Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt: Are you ready to take a holiday selfie? Because this law firm is totally here for the holiday cheer! From the nominator: “Click on the link and you’ll be prompted to activate your on-screen camera. But before you smile and say cheese, toggle through a fun carousel of virtual ‘props’ — a Santa hat, an elf hat, various wigs, beards, mustaches, masks, etc.”
10. Wolf Greenfield: Last year’s winner is back again with abother stop-motion video that features a snowman that seems to accidentally come to life. “This year, we wanted to remind people of a time when a frosty winter’s day held endless possibilities for fun—and that the magic is still there, even if it shows up differently than it did when we were kids.” Click here to see how the video was made.
Now it’s time for our audience to vote. We’ll keep the polls open through TUESDAY, JANUARY 1, 2018, at 11:59 p.m. (Eastern time). This gives you ample time to campaign for your pick over the holidays (but please, please, please don’t cheat).
Thanks to all the entrants and nominators, good luck to the finalists, and happy holidays to everyone! Above the Law is happy to celebrate holiday cheer with you!
