We post about a lot of bar exam horror stories here at Above the Law, but really this takes the genre to a new, horrifying, and stomach-churning level. According to a recent lawsuit, a woman alleges she was secretly filmed showering while she was staying at a Hampton Inn in Albany for the bar exam.
Like many recent law school grads seeking to be admitted to the bar in New York, the plaintiff booked a hotel room in Albany while she took the two-day admissions exam. She stayed in the Hampton Inn for the July 2015 administration of the bar exam and says she was unaware anything was unusual about her stay until three years later. According to reports, in September of this year she alleges she received an email asking “this is you right?” with a link to a video on a porn site of her showering — with her full name listed. She then received multiple, threatening emails from the same person who claimed to know details about her education and employer.
When the plaintiff did not respond to the threats, the video appeared on additional porn sites and was emailed to friends and former classmates. According to the lawsuit, plaintiff also received an email demanding an immediate $2,000 payment followed by $1,000 a month for a year to prevent the further dissemination of the video.

In a statement, Hilton, the parent company of Hampton Inn, expressed its concern over the allegations in the lawsuit:
“We take the safety and wellbeing of our guests incredibly seriously, and find the details included in the civil filing distressing,” said a spokesperson for Hilton, the parent company of Hampton Inn.
“We commit to supporting the independent ownership and management of the property as they investigate, respond and cooperate with any law enforcement investigations,” the statement added.
Additionally, a spokesperson for the specific Hampton Inn property said:
“The safety and security of our guests is our highest priority, and we emphatically do not condone any form of this type of invasion of privacy,” the property said in a statement.
“Recently, the hotel underwent a complete renovation. During that process, no recording devices of any kind were uncovered,” it added, promising to work with authorities to find and hold accountable the perpetrator.
