Summer Associate Hopes Firm Meeting Doesn't Interfere With Gym Time

Not every question is a good question.

Once more, Biglaw enters the summer season and that means we’re due for Summer Associates making a string of professional errors befitting a rookie attorney. Usually we have to wait until somebody gets drunk, a development that’s becoming increasingly rare in Biglaw programs. This time we have a summer who’s on a strong enough health kick that he really wants to skip the morning meeting:

Is attendance at the 7:30am breakfast mandatory? I already wake up at 5am to make it to the gym before work. I’m not sure I can handle a 3am wakeup time.

Or you could skip the gym for one day instead of blowing off a professional meeting. It’s hard to imagine this breakfast meeting is a daily event throughout the summer. If it is, start working out in the evenings. At least consider these before asking a firm attorney to skip out.

Also… four and a half hours of gym time? Good for you!

This “Summer As-SWOLE-ciate” provides a teachable moment for all Summers: if you’re invited to something as a Summer… you should treat it as mandatory. Your role at this stage in your career is to throw yourself into every professional opportunity. Demonstrate an eagerness to take on everything, especially an entirely low-impact morning practice group meeting.

We have no idea how this email exchange ended up, but we assume the query was shot down prompting the follow-up, “do you even lift, bro?”
