This week, we witnessed truly horrific images. The brutal death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, captured on video and seared in our minds, has shaken many of us to our core. Alone, it is enough to cause outrage on the most basic human level. When coupled with the video from Central Park, the death of Ahmaud Arbrey and too many other incidents to list in this message, it overwhelms.

What happened to Mr. Floyd, and in the other shocking incidents across the country, should never be tolerated. These incidents have again brought into focus the dark reality for many—racism continues to run rampant through this country. They also serve as yet another reminder of the persistence of injustice in America, and why many of us feel an imperative to give voice to our shared frustration and reaffirm our guiding principles. Acts of racism, violence and hatred have no place in our society—and we condemn them.

A commitment to diversity is woven into the DNA of our firm—rooted in the values and actions of our founders and visible in our culture every day. Diversity is about attracting and developing the most talented people, regardless of personal characteristics, traits or background—whether it is race, culture, sexual orientation, gender or disability status. We see our individual differences as assets which enhance the quality of life for each of us and strengthen what we can accomplish as an organization. It is our obligation to foster such an inclusive community by making it a priority, each and every day. It is the right thing to do—and it is fundamental.

We understand that these events have significant effects that are very personal and individual. Know the firm has a host of wellness resources available to each of you on the infoNet.

Please take some time this weekend to continue to process these tragedies and to reach out to loved ones or friends who might need a shoulder to lean on. Although we cannot be together in person to grieve and support each other, please know that we are here if anyone needs to talk. You are not alone; we stand together as a Ropes community.
