Subject: Firm Holiday on June 19th (Juneteenth)

Dear Members of the Paul, Weiss Community,

On June 19, 1865, 155 years ago next Friday, the last of the enslaved black people in Texas learned that the Civil War had ended months earlier and that they were free under the auspices of President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth is a national day of celebration, marking the end of slavery in the United States and the beginning of freedom for African Americans, which to this day still has not been fully realized for persons and communities of color, as recent events make painfully clear.

One of the suggestions following last week’s town hall was for Paul, Weiss to observe Juneteenth as a firm holiday. We are pleased to do so; our offices will be closed next Friday so that all members of our community can reflect on issues around systemic racism in our country and continue our vital work in support of racial justice.

Juneteenth has taken on special significance in view of the recent atrocities. We are working intensely, with the country’s leading racial justice public interest organizations, on numerous strategic initiatives intended to achieve racial justice and ensure that all Americans are treated equally under the law, regardless of the color of their skin.

We have been overwhelmed by the support provided by the entire Paul, Weiss community in support of our efforts.

We will continue to fight, as hard as we can and for as long as it takes, until we have achieved racial justice.

Please take care of yourselves and be safe.

Brad
