Rudy Giuliani Scores Razzie Nomination For, Ahem, Touching Performance

The honors keep rolling in for late-stage Rudy.

Like most cinephiles, I’ve spent the last few weeks eagerly awaiting the release of the year’s nominations for the greatest award in film. Not the Oscars, but the Razzies. And while a number of nominations went to poorsploitation epic Hillbilly Elegy by Yale Law’s J.D. Vance, the legal community’s proudest moment was the nomination of Rudy Giuliani for Worst Supporting Actor and Worst Screen Combo.

For anyone who doesn’t remember Giuliani’s performance in Borat 2:

The former New York City mayor and personal attorney to Donald Trump appeared in the Borat sequel under the guise of a TV interview with Borat’s 15-year-old daughter Tutar, played by 24-year-old Bulgarian actress Maria Bakalova, who previously scored a Golden Globe nod for her performance. After the interview, the pair proceed to a bedroom, Giuliani lies back on the bed, and is caught in a compromising situation as Borat bursts into the room yelling at Giuliani, “she’s too old for you.”

The worst screen combo award seems misplaced, as Bakalova is nominated for an Oscar and as cringeworthy as their combination may be, it’s not her fault.

In the supporting actor category, Giuliani squares off against Chevy Chase for “The Very Excellent Mr. Dundee,” Shia LeBeouf for his work in “The Tax Collector,” Arnold Schwarzenegger for “Iron Mask,” and Bruce Willis for three amazingly poor outings in “Breach,” “Hard Kill,” and “Survive the Night.” How did Bruce Willis make three movies during a lockdown?

Best of luck to the former mayor in his new career. I know I’ll be haunted by that image of him for years to come.
