How To Make Diversity A Real Priority For Your Law Firm

You have to do the work.

In the latest episode of The Jabot, I talk with Kerry Shad and Sharita Whitaker, both partners at Smith Anderson. We chat about why they went to law school in the first place and how they found the practice areas that are right for them.

We also get into Diversity & Inclusion nitty gritty like what D&I means to them, what D&I initiatives are necessary for law firms, the advantages of D&I programs in midsized firms compared to Biglaw, the impact of D&I on recruiting efforts, and how recruiting efforts compare to retention efforts. We also discuss how they balance the D&I efforts, and firm management generally, with their legal practices.

The Jabot podcast is an offshoot of the Above the Law brand focused on the challenges women, people of color, LGBTQIA, and other diverse populations face in the legal industry. Our name comes from none other than the Notorious Ruth Bader Ginsburg and the jabot (decorative collar) she wore when delivering dissents from the bench. It’s a reminder that even when we aren’t winning, we’re still a powerful force to be reckoned with.

Happy listening!
