Looking For A Cool JD Advantage Gig? Have You Considered TikTok?
If only you knew how hard it was for me to not make any ‘recipe for success’ jokes.
Joanne Lee Mulinaro, a former law firm partner better known as the Korean Vegan, is one of those people who lives an impossible life that everyone on social media watches and envies. But in the good way. This former law firm partner managed to exchange billable hours and clients for boiling water and conversation. And it’s a total hat trick. She’s getting paid to 1) cook amazing food, 2) foster community as she shares stories from her life, and 3) dunk on Trumpsters in a way that almost makes Civil Procedure seem cool, all without having to attend after-hours firm parties in Manhattan.
As a 1L, I would hear that you don’t have to practice law just because you have a JD. In part because it’s true. Career Services may have also known that I dropped out of the running for Order of the Coif early on. Besides that, this is proof that thinking like a lawyer could be a set up for something other than Compliance work. There’s still hope to do something that people give a radish’s ass about. Maybe it’s cooking. Maybe it’s singing. Maybe it’s bringing back fingerless gloves. I hope not, but it’s possible. And if you’re looking for inspiration in the meantime, check out Ms. Mulinaro’s vids on incorporating ecological awareness and cultural preservation into your noodles. Maybe even on company time. And if you’ve been thinking about lateraling out, include your TikTok handle on your resume just to be safe.
