Bedbugs Have Come To Skadden

The Wilmington office of the Biglaw firm has an infestation.

Cartoon BedbugsBedbugs are not a new problem in Biglaw.

But it’s still an unsettling one. The mere possibility of catching the modern scourge just by working really adds insult to the injurious hours already required in Biglaw. And it looks like folks in the Wilmington office of Skadden are dealing with this issue.

Last week Skadden-ites were informed the bedbugs had infested the 7th floor of the firm’s Delaware office. Gone is the couch in the wellness room as a likely vector, and exterminators are dealing with the bugs. Plus, according to the email circulated (read below), a trained basset hound will be sniffing around to make sure the full scope of the problem is dealt with.

It’s worth remembering that, as itchy as the prospect of bedbugs may make us, they are not a sign of cleanliness (or lack thereof). The vermin are attracted to warmth and blood, so wherever people are, so too are the bloodsuckers. Even five-star hotels — and white-shoe firms like Skadden — can get bedbugs.

Let’s all take a second to remember a more innocent time, when this was the strongest association most of us had with bedbugs — and good luck trying to get that catchy song out of your head.

All I’m saying is, you don’t have these problems when everyone works from home.
