Hint: That future president offered a memorably elastic definition of an impeachable offense: “whatever a majority of the House of Representatives considers it to be.” The impeachment push was widely read as revenge for the Senate’s rejection of two of Nixon’s Supreme Court nominees. When the justice finally retired in 1975, his old antagonist, by then in the Oval Office, got to pick his replacement.
