Judging by the recent 60 Minutes segment, artificial intelligence is taking over the world. The problem with this picture is that if all machine learning and artificial intelligence are as effective as IBM Watson, how do any of us still have jobs doing anything other than, well, building artificial intelligence? Clearly we are in a transition stage, and, to make things even more stuck-in-limbo-ish, have no clear picture of how and when (or if) AI is going to put us all out of a job change the legal landscape. On the one hand, law firms are still hiring, but, at the same time, you’d be hard pressed to find any tech company in legal that is not using some component of AI to try to replace human lawyers.
This issue is not limited to legal, but if you’re considering buying a particular product for your practice, then you should be focusing on the narrower application: can AI help me or is it too soon?
