There are lots of pieces of awesome in yesterday’s episode of John Oliver. In his main rant, he extols the virtues of net neutrality. It’s a worthy cause — and one that Oliver himself has taken on before — and it prevents internet service providers (ISPs) from providing unequal internet speeds depending on the user’s content choices.
Ajit Pai, a well-liked former Verizon lawyer and graduate of the University of Chicago Law School, has been hailed as “a smart pick” by President Trump to serve as chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). But Pai poses a significant threat to net neutrality, having raised the possibility of eliminating net neutrality and cutting back on FCC oversight of broadband providers more generally.
Here’s John Oliver’s segment on net neutrality. For my money, it’s his takedown of Pai’s penchant for using gag mugs (at 7:35 in the below video) that lands particularly well.
