The U.S. relationship with the United Nations is on shaky ground. Earlier this year, the U.S. unilaterally withdrew funding from UN programs and just last month Nikki Haley threatened to pull the United States out of the Human Rights Council. Can they even do that? What are the legal implications of that move? We’ve invited a panel of experts to discuss these very issues:
- Jane Connors is Amnesty International’s Director of International Advocacy. Previously, Jane had a career spanning two decades at the UN, most recently with the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).
- Rosa Freedman, Professor of Law and International Development, who has researched and published extensively on the United Nations.
- Felice Gaer, the director of the Jacob Blaustein Institute for the Advancement of Human Rights, is a long-standing expert member of the UN Committee Against Torture.
- Ahmed Shaheed is an academic at the Essex Human Rights Centre and UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion and Belief.
- Dominik Zaum is Research Dean and Professor of International Relations at the University of Reading.
