Billion Dollar Firms Highlight DC’s Am Law 100 Presence

How did DC firms fare on the Am Law 100?

Four firms with “a strong center of gravity” in the DC market managed to clear the billion dollar revenue hurdle in 2017. WilmerHale and Akin Gump both clocked just over one billion to remain, respectively, 24th and 29th on the new Am Law 100, while Sidley Austin and Hogan Lovells both raked in over two billion to move up to 6th and 7th.

We looked at the New York firms earlier this week, so now it’s time to focus on Washington. The full DC breakdown from the National Law Journal features 11 firms making the list, topped by Sidley Austin:

7 Sidley Austin
8 Hogan Lovells
24 WilmerHale
29 Akin Gump
36 Arnold & Porter
37 Covington
52 McGuireWoods
64 Venable
78 Williams & Connolly
82 Crowell & Moring
96 Steptoe & Johnson LLP

If there’s anything to take away from this list, it’s the relative stability of this year’s Am Law 100. All of these firms made the Am Law 100 the year before and they all remain ranked roughly where they were on the last list. The lone exception, of course, is Arnold & Porter, whose merger with Kaye Scholer catapulted the firm from 55th to 36th. It’s a strange quirk of the modern legal market that in an age of increasing volatility rumbling below the surface, the year-to-year rankings paint a picture of constancy, sweet constancy.

In any event, another good year for the Washington firms.
