Three Things to Know this Tax Season

Oh, tax season.  Coming right on the heels of a new tax bill that passed at the end of 2017 (and confusing everyone).

To catch up on the impact of the new bill, review the three new course offerings by Lawline that are designed to help us all better understand the effects of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 – for individuals, corporations, and non-profits.  In the meantime, here are three things to remember this Tax Day:

  1. Your taxes aren’t due this year until Tuesday, April 17.  According to Business Insider, this year’s delay is because April 15 falls on a Sunday and DC’s Emancipation Day is that Monday, April 16.
  2. You actually can file your taxes for free (depending on your income).  If you qualify, you can utilize the resources at IRS Free File and file them at no charge.
  3. It turns out that there are very different consequences for failing to file your taxes on time, depending on whether you owe taxes or are entitled to a refund.  If you owe, you’ll be subject to the failure-to-file penalty if you don’t file by April 17. If you’re getting a refund, you need to file by April 18, 2021 – or even later if you filed for an extension – in order to collect.  However, the IRS may choose to file a substitute return on your behalf, and repeated failure to file can result in additional penalties and criminal prosecution. Failure to file can even result in a personal visit from the IRS, so it’s really best to file on time.
