Musical Chairs: Orrick Assembles an Impressive Team of Finance and High-Yield Lawyers
The law firm of Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe continues to do battle with its former client, MGA Entertainment. It seems that the maker of Bratz dolls is still acting in bratty fashion, by not paying its legal bills, and Orrick has moved to withdraw from representing MGA. Fortunately, things are happier on the transactional side for Orrick. The firm just announced that it's picking up five bank finance and high-yield partners, for its New York office. The new arrivals come from four different places, including three firms whose names you will definitely recognize.... - Sponsored

Say hello to the Global 100 for 2011. This is the American Lawyer's list of the world's 100 largest law firms, ranked by total revenue. Lawyers are a competitive lot. So you're probably less interested in the overall figures than in how different firms fared in the rankings....

Inside Straight: The Rule of Equal Dignity
Years ago, I saw a memo written by a law firm partner who was renowned for mistreating junior partners, associates, staff, and lost children who wandered in the front door looking for their parents. But this memo showed a whole different personality. The memo was directed to a practice leader who had solicited comments about […] -

Her Stories: The Evolving Role of Women in Business and Law
At the Creating Pathways to Diversity Conference, sponsored by the Minority Corporate Counsel Association (MCCA), there was a great lunchtime discussion called “Her Stories: The Evolving Role of Women in Business and Law.” It featured a panel of heavy hitters: two women currently serving as general counsel to Fortune 500 companies, and a third who […] -

Inside Straight: My Wistful Day
In-house columnist Mark Herrmann is fast approaching the two-year anniversary of his move in-house, and he doesn't often look back wistfully on his former life as a partner at one of the world's largest law firms. But last Tuesday was different. Last Tuesday, the general counsel of an international company called him, and he started to reminisce about his Biglaw days.... -

Biglaw Starts To Manage Expectations About Bonuses
The first bit of bonus news has leaked out of Biglaw. We're not talking about spring bonuses, and we're not talking about random mid-year bonuses. We're talking about regular, end-of-the-year, take-it-to-the-champagne-room bonuses. And sure, the early news is bad, but that's to be expected. This first report is just what Biglaw wants you to hear. But if the past year in bonus news proves anything, it's that Cravath sets the bonus market, even when they do it late.... -

Partners for Sale on Craigslist
It’s no secret that the legal market is still in the tank. Unemployed associates have grown accustomed to scrounging the Internet for any and all job openings that might materialize - even sketchy postings offering $35,000 salaries to sharp dressers. Just how bad has the economy gotten? Bad enough that Craigslist isn’t just for associates anymore.... -

One of the most colorful characters in the saga of Howrey LLP, the once-thriving law firm that dissolved this past March, was Robert Ruyak, former chairman of the firm. Alas, many at Howrey found Ruyak's leadership to be less than inspiring, but yesterday brought news that Ruyak has found a new professional home. Where's he going? -

Lawyer of the Month: August Reader Poll
The month of August brought us a slew of disasters, both natural and otherwise. At the end of the month, we faced off against the Great D.C. Earthquake of 2011. Small Firms, Big Lawyers: Supervising Partners and Teaching Partners
Recently, small firm columnist Jay Shepherd talked to a fourth-year-associate friend who'd been working at a new small firm for several months. When Shepherd asked him how it was going, his friend said "great" in a way that suggested anything but. A partner was making his friend's life a living hell. What made this partner so horrible? It wasn't so much that the partner was horrible. It was that he was merely a "supervising partner"....

Letter from London: On the Brink of a Double Dip?
Welcome to Letter from London, a weekly look at the U.K. legal world by our London correspondent, Alex Aldridge. He asked various managing partners what European debt contagion would mean for large law firms in the U.K. And, predictably, they reeled off the standard recession line about law firms being “well placed to handle the anticipated wave of restructuring work.” The worry is what happens after the restructuring is complete... -

Inside Straight: 360-Degree Reviews
360-degree reviews are helpful because you critique others. It's relatively easy -- or, at least, routine -- to be asked to critique folks situated beneath you in a hierarchy. But it's a little different to be asked to critique folks who are situated horizontally or above you. When you're asked to critique those people formally, it makes you think a little harder: What are those people doing right? What are they doing wrong? What information should they hear about their performance? -
