Morning Docket: 07.18.17
* R. Kelly’s lawyer responds to allegations that a bunch of women are trapped in the proverbial closet. [Entertainment Tonight]
* The big news of the night was the slow, painful, uncovered death of the GOP tax cut. McConnell now says he’ll push for a clean repeal of Obamacare and leave the “replace” part for later, which would theoretically take it out of the reconciliation process. And that means 60 votes or some drastic changes. This is either a bluff or a lot of people are about to learn more than they ever wanted to know about parliamentary rules. [ABC News]
* Need judicial approval to tour the country? Sing it with me now… “Jed Gon’ Give It To Ya.”[Law360]
* Justice Kagan with an amusing anecdote about being vetted by the Obama administration. [National Law Journal]
* Plaintiffs’ attorneys in the Trump University case say efforts to undo the settlement over notice concerns, “effectively ask this court to declare Rule 23 unconstitutional.” Dude, I hate to break this to you, but that’s what the Supreme Court’s been saying for at least 10 years.
* Disney is locked in an IP litigation over the technology they use to map actors’ expressions onto CGI characters in movies like in Avengers: Age of Ultron, where they made a merciless robot fixated on world domination appear to have a soul. Sorry, did I say Avengers? I meant “a Bob Iger presentation at a Disney shareholder meeting.” [Law.com]
* Because all other problems in the country are settled, Congress is looking into overturning Washington D.C.’s assisted suicide law. [USA Today]
* Charlie Hustle is suing Trump lawyer John Dowd formerly of Akin Gump for defamation. [Philadelphia Inquirer]
* Google successfully staves off Labor Department request for compensation information in ongoing discrimination probe. God, Assistant can’t give you any useful information. [Corporate Counsel]

Morning Docket
Morning Docket: 10.28.16
* Slowly but surely, the effects of Brexit have started to take their toll on Biglaw firms in the United Kingdom. Thanks to the declining value of the pound, following a salary review, Akin Gump has decided to completely overhaul its compensation system and will now pay its junior associates in line with current exchange rates. Ouch! [The Lawyer (sub. req.)]
* “I do not consider it a coincidence that this Democratic smear on Justice Thomas comes as he celebrates 25 years on the court, and in the heat of a presidential election.” Former assistant White House counsel Mark Paoletta is having trouble believing attorney Moira Smith’s groping allegation against Justice Clarence Thomas, while the justice himself says it’s “preposterous,” claiming “it never happened.” [Washington Post]
* “[M]ale management has not uttered a verbal word to me since April 1 — radio silence — despite my repeated invitations and efforts to sit down and discuss important issues that need to be sorted out….” If you’d like to know what life has been like for partner Kerrie Campbell since she filed her $50M suit against Chadbourne & Parke, this interview, though it may be brief, will tell you quite a bit about it. [Big Law Business]
* A troubled Florida law firm — one that’s currently grappling with an ethics investigation against at least two attorneys and whose managing partner has previously been disciplined by the state bar — has turned to layoffs in an attempt to solve some of its financial problems. Thus far, more than 50 employees have been let go from the firm since this past spring. We may have more on this later today. [Orlando Sentinel]
* “This is an attack on the credibility of the court.” Just when you thought elections for state judges couldn’t get any duller, Microsoft’s Bill Gates is banding together with other billionaires to oust Washington State Supreme Court Justice Charles Wiggins from his seat on the bench. In all, they’ve spent $850,000 to fund political action committees in an effort to convince voters to cast ballots for his opponent. [WSJ Law Blog]

Morning Docket: 06.13.16
* We know our readers: here’s the only news that you care about this morning. This is the roster of salary movement news from Friday and Saturday: Desmarais, Brown Rudnick, Susman Godfrey, White & Case, Shearman & Sterling, and Baker Botts. If you’re ever worried that you’ve missed any of our coverage, check out our omnibus 2016 salary page where we collect all of these stories. [2016 Salary Increase / Above the Law]
* You may be wondering why some law firms in your city haven’t hopped on board the Cravath-inspired MoneyLaw train yet. It’s apparently all about competing market forces. John Beulick, Armstrong Teasdale’s new managing partner, says he’s considering bumping up associate pay because “[w]e want to and need to be competitive in our markets to have the talent that clients want us to have.” [Big Law Business]
* Speaking of raises for associates in flyover country, four Texas-based firms and seven national firms with offices in the Lone Star state have already announced matches to the new Cravath scale. Three more Texas firms — Akin Gump, Haynes and Boone, and Andrews Kurth — are expected to follow suit in the coming days. Please be sure to send us your firm’s memos ASAP after raises are announced! [Dallas Morning News]
* WHATCHA GONNA DO, BROTHER, WHEN LITIGATION FINANCE RUNS WILD ON YOU?!? Thanks to billionaire Peter Thiel’s financial assistance, Hulk Hogan bodyslammed Gawker into submission with a multimillion-dollar jury verdict. After declaring bankruptcy and entering into an asset purchase agreement, the media company is investigating possible legal claims against the venture capitalist. [Forbes]
* “I don’t really think [this lawsuit] has legs.” Doctors in California are filing suit to block The End of Life Option Act, a new state law that legalizes physician-assisted suicide. They claim that the law violates the state’s constitution with regard to citizens’ equal protection and due process rights because it fails to make “rational distinctions” between those who qualify under the law and those who are not covered under it.
