Latham & Watkins: New Managing Partner for the New York Office

As multiple tipsters have been telling us, Dave Gordon, managing partner of Latham & Watkins’s New York office is putting down the mantle of leadership. But Gordon will be staying at the firm, continuing his private practice.

James Brandt will be taking over at the Lipstick Building. And of course Robert Dell remains in place as the firm-wide managing partner.

Gordon attracted attention after Latham laid off 440 people a year and a half ago. First-year attorneys were caught up in the layoffs as well, especially in New York. And some of the departed associates left with bitter feelings towards the firm, and Gordon specifically.

But Kirk Davenport, a member of Latham’s executive committee, assured us that last year’s layoffs had nothing to do with Gordon’s new move…

Here’s the statement from Davenport:

Dave has served in the role with great distinction, while maintaining an active practice in the energy space. We are thankful for his many contributions and are confident that Jimmy will continue to build upon Dave’s leadership as our position in the New York market, both in the litigation and transactional arenas, continues to thrive and grow. We are all very proud to have Jimmy leading the team.

Additional tipsters at Latham report that Gordon’s move is just part of normal business at the firm. Gordon served his term and it was time to cycle in a new top guy in the New York office.

Other sources seem to want to believe that this is some kind of punishment for a href=”https://abovethelaw.com/2010/06/how-did-latham-become-the-poster-child-for-layoffs/”>”Lathaming” first years. But frankly the thought is absurd. Whatever Gordon’s role in the layoffs, it was clearly a firm-wide decision. Managing office partners don’t get punished for doing their job.
