Quote of the Day: Bringing Crazy Back (to SCOTUS)

This is a pretty cray-cray amicus brief in the Supreme Court. When there are more citations to the Bible than to case law, you know something's up.

Same-sex marriage will destroy this nation. If the leaders of this country treat what God has called abominable as something to be respected, revered, and blessed with the seal of approval of the government, that will cross a final line with God. The harm that will befall this nation, when the condign destructive wrath of God pours out on a nation that purposefully, in a calculating manner, institutionalized marriage licenses for same-sex unions, is the ultimate harm to the health, welfare and safety of the people.

Margie Phelps, counsel to the Westboro Baptist Church, in the Church’s amicus brief in the U.S. Supreme Court case of Hollingsworth v. Perry (aka the Proposition 8 / gay marriage case).

(A closer look at the lunacy, after the jump.)

You can check out the thirty-page brief, captioned “Brief of Westboro Baptist Church As Amicus Curiae In Support Of Neither Party Suggesting Reversal,” over here. It has a single argument heading: “The government has a compelling interest in protecting the people from the destructive effects of same-sex marriage.”

The brief is long on Biblical citations and short on law. It just cites eight cases but dozens of Biblical sources (either citations to the Bible itself or to commentary). Its bottom line: “The government is duty bound — in this Christian nation — to institute the standard of God on marriage, and pass and uphold laws that forbid same-sex marriage.”

This doesn’t look promising, but don’t count the “Church” out just yet. Margie Phelps, daughter of WBC founder Fred Phelps, scored an 8-1 victory in Snyder v. Phelps. This isn’t her first time at the One First Street rodeo.

And if a huge meteor lands on Justice Anthony M. Kennedy as he’s traipsing about Salzburg this summer with his fancy European friends, count on the Phelpses to say, “We told you so.” And to show up at poor Justice Kennedy’s funeral, signs in hand.

And now this exists: Westboro Baptist’s Prop 8 Amicus Brief [Good As You]
