Which Law Firms Are Considered Some Of The ‘Best Companies to Work For’?

Which firms had pay that was high enough, perks that were good enough, and environments that were nurturing enough to make the cut?

For the past 18 years at about this time, Fortune has released its list of the 100 Best Companies to Work For. As usual, a few law firms managed to sneak their way onto a list that includes employers like Google, Wegmans, and Twitter. With companies like that on the list, each year we wonder if the people at Fortune have any idea what they’re talking about, because there’s no way a law firm could be on a similar level.

We try to cover this list every year (see our posts in 2014, 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008, and 2007). In 2014, six law firms made the list: Baker Donelson (#31) Alston & Bird (#40), Perkins Coie (#41), Bingham McCutchen (#60), Arnold & Porter (#81), and Cooley (#100).

This year, five law firms made the list. Which firms had pay that was high enough, perks that were good enough, and environments that were nurturing enough to make the cut?

The five law firms on this year’s list are… the same five firms that made last year’s list, minus one firm that recently went bust: Bingham McCutchen. How utterly dramatic. But it’s worth noting that while four those five firms more or less retained their Fortune ranking, give or take a few slots, one of them rose dramatically from the #100 spot in 2014. Congratulations to the following five firms on being fun enough for Fortune:

Last year, we decided that Cooley had the best work perks by far, what with the firm’s award of the proverbial “Get Out of Biglaw Jail Free” card. This year, Cooley has once again proven its coolness with fun events like these:

Cooley employees celebrate team and individual successes through events such as Dancing with the Stars competitions, karaoke, table tennis tournaments, sundaes and bingo and Nintendo Wii dance-offs. These social events happen regularly, sometimes weekly, like the Thursday night beer and pizza gatherings or yearly, like the holiday office parties.

Who could pass up a trip to the hottest venue around, Club Cooley?

Readers, have these rankings actually been earned? Can you think of a law firm that deserves to be recognized, but hasn’t been? Please feel free to give us your thoughts.
