Law Revue Video Contest 2015: The Finalists!

Who are the finalists for this year's Law Revue Video Contest? Check them out -- and cast your vote!

4. NYU Law — Clerkships

LAT: Great minds think alike: back in 2004, I wrote alternate lyrics to Missy Elliott’s “Work It” that were all about the hunt for clerkship gold. I enjoyed this well-executed video; I just wish they had done a “product placement” for my new novel about the clerkship experience, Supreme Ambitions (affiliate link).
ELIE: Holy s**t, black people rapping. We have BLACK people, actually rapping, in a rap parody! And white people and probably some Jewish people too, but ALSO BLACK PEOPLE. I don’t think this one will win, but I’m glad it exists. NYU Law, let’s all hang out and talk about Cornel West’s scholarship and the appropriateness of another black academic slamming him in public when this is all over.
STACI: Come on, was I the only one who noticed that the girl in pigtails was doing the same dance from the original Missy Elliott video? This video had something for everyone, but I especially appreciated the “handle your dicta” line.
JOE: You were not, Staci. The dancer was one of many things that made this a great video. NYU Law consistently comes to play in this competition and did not disappoint this year.

5. UVA Law — Gunner Nights

LAT: Like NYU, UVA is a perennial contender in our contest. Good acting, good singing, good dancing, good outfits, and cute guys in white t-shirts. What’s not to like?
ELIE: Can somebody tell me why Grease is still culturally relevant? Oh, it’s not? Cool. I thought I was taking crazy pills. Couldn’t we get all the way up to Wicked? That’s only 15 years old. “La, La, la, la, you’ll get an offer. Just not, quite as many offers, as, MEEEE.” IT’S NOT HARD, PEOPLE. Also, everything that Joe said.
STACI: I love Grease, and I love it even more when the singers in law revue videos can actually sing. Year after year, UVA continues to have very strong singers. I’m actually afraid of what will happen after these people graduate.
JOE: I never got into Law Revue while in law school because I chose not to indulge the sad dreams of bad karaoke singers who get overly excited by the fact that a word like “gunner” sounds kind of like “summer.” There’s no joke to this video beyond that. It appears my colleagues are far more excited about being able to “sing” as though there aren’t millions and millions of people who do it for a living. Staci wants to know what will happen to y’all, eh? Here’s a guess, in about 5 years the walking husk left over from law practice will recapture that shred of self-worth when they f**king dominate “Beauty School Dropout” at the Roanoke Monday Night Karaoke Challenge and win $10 off their tab. And I’ll be there to slow clap.

6. Washington & Lee University School of Law — Dirty Prof

Sponsored

LAT: My personal favorite of this year’s entries — and not just because of the shameless ATL shout-outs (around 1:50 and 2:13). This short and sweet video was fun and fast-paced, with entertaining lyrics and nice eye candy. Also, thanks for the closed captioning. (P.S. I have to ask: was that an anal-beads joke at 0:55?)
ELIE: I LOL’d. This was different. And funny. And had high production values. And was flattering to ATL. I really hope that there’s one specific W&L professor that they are talking about. And that he knows they’re making fun of him. And that he’s reading this post while holding a glass of wine and thinking, “But I’m rich as sh*t.”
STACI: In the four years I’ve been judging law revue contests, this is one of my absolute favorites. Seriously, guys, I showed this one to my mom. From the lyrics to the production values to the gorgeous, half-naked men who apparently love me lots, in my humble opinion, this one is the best.
JOE: To borrow from the late, great Roger Ebert, I hated this video. Hated hated hated hated hated this video. Hated it. But apparently the one thing my colleagues are more swayed by than mediocre karaoke is blatant ATL dicksucking.

It’s time to vote, everyone. Polls close on SUNDAY, MAY 3, at 11:59 PM (Eastern time). Feel free to get out the vote among your friends and family (but please, no bots or other forms of cheating). Good luck to all the finalists!
