— A white lawyer, upon being confronted by his black neighbor, Fay Wells, vice president of strategy at a multinational company in California, after he’d reported to the police that she was breaking into her own apartment to burglarize it. Nineteen officers from the Santa Monica Police Department arrived at the scene, and several of them had guns pointed at her. Wells’s neighbor told her that he’d called the police because he’d never seen her before.
