You really can set your watch to it.

On Monday, Sean Spicer declared that Marc Kasowitz had the full confidence of Donald Trump. Cue some negative media coverage, and Kasowitz is out. It happens every damn time Spicer expresses the president’s vote of confidence.

Sean Spicer is the little girl from The Ring.

CBS’s Major Garrett put out the news over night:

But Maggie Haberman of the New York Times disagrees slightly:

That strikes me as a distinction without difference. With the massive spotlight on this matter, no one was really going to make a clean break. Kasowitz will return to his day-to-day activities at the offices of Kasowitz Benson, outside of lunch and dinner, and never show up in this case again except as a blip at the bottom of a press release identifying him as part of Trump’s “extended legal team.” He’s gone.

Whether Kasowitz left entirely of his own accord is unknown, but rumors had circulated that both sides were itching to end the engagement, and the simultaneous resignation of legal team spokesperson Mark Corallo suggests someone didn’t like the fundamental structure of the team. Regardless of how he ended up on the outs, this is the best thing that could have happened to Kasowitz. Taking on this lost cause of a defense exposed him to an ethics complaint, a scathing investigative report, and an embarrassing public squabble with a critic. All against a backdrop of chatter that his firm was in trouble. Now he can move on.

That’s Jay Sekulow’s music, everybody. And it sounds like bad classic rock. Sekulow’s quasi-lawyerly sideshow can now take full ownership of this trainwreck. Sure, Ty Cobb recently joined the legal team, but he’s not going to last once Trump figures out he’s not a Hall of Famer who hates Jews. And John Dowd is one photo shoot away from making Kasowitz’s “watch your back, bitch” look like a Hallmark card. Just a reminder of his professionalism hit parade:

We’ll just have to wait and see what this wacky trio manages to accomplish! For now, the original Moe of this team has walked off into the palms. Let’s see if the Shemp years fare any better.

Good night, sweet prince. You taught us all to watch our backs, and we’ll never forget you for it.
