Law Students Lend Helping Hands In Aftermath Of Hurricane Harvey

All Houston law schools have been closed since last week.

The law students are faring the same as the rest of Houston – some have been totally unaffected, while others have been rescued from their homes by the Coast Guard. We are a tight-knit community, both in the school and in our city as a whole, and have been calling each other, keeping up on Facebook, opening homes to one another, and helping where we can.

Houston is a special city, and [the University of Houston law Center] is a special law school. I feel very lucky to be part of both, whether in crisis or out of it. Our people are kind, generous and are not afraid to get their own feet wet to help keep one another dry.

— Reed Fryar, president of Houston Law Center’s Student Bar Association, commenting on the unprecedented flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey that’s impacted students at the school. Some Houston Law students have used their trucks to pull other cars to safety from the floodwaters, while others have welcomed people in need of food and shelter into their homes. Houston Law has been closed since Friday, and will remain closed through at least Wednesday.
