Are Male Lawyers Getting Less Attractive?

Are male lawyers and law students getting uglier? Whether male lawyers are decreasing in attractiveness seems subjective. But there's actually some evidence that the men of the legal profession are 66 percent less hot than they were last year....

Last week, we posed a provocative question: Are The 1Ls Actually Dumber This Year? Based on the decisive vote in our reader poll, the answer appears to be “yes.”

Today we bring you another controversial query: Are male lawyers and law students getting uglier? Does the J.D. degree — and the student debt that comes with it — make them look fat?

Whether male lawyers are decreasing in attractiveness seems subjective. But there’s actually some evidence that the men of the legal profession are 66 percent less hot than they were last year….

In October 2010, we wrote about the strong lawyer representation in Cosmopolitan magazine’s 2010 Bachelor of the Year contest. The competition featured two law students, Luke Howarth (Idaho) and Wayne McGaw Jr. (Louisiana), and one practicing lawyer, Jonny McCoy (South Carolina). In the end, top honors went to a chef: Ryan “Mickey” McLean, of Ohio. But the lawyers, at 6 percent of the field, or 3 out of 51 bachelors, held their own.

Sadly, that’s not the case this year. The 2011 Bachelor of the Year finalists have been announced, and the number of high-flying legal eagles has plummeted, by two-thirds. Only one of the nominated hotties has a legal background: Yemi Ojutiku, a 27-year-old tax lawyer representing Washington, D.C.

When it comes to hot lawyer bachelors, can quality make up for quantity? Ojutiku is quite impressive, whether he’s in a two-piece suit or his birthday suit:

But his beauty isn’t just skin deep; he has a gorgeous résumé too. Ojutiku received a B.A. from UNC – Chapel Hill, a J.D. from Georgetown, and a tax LL.M. (with distinction) from Georgetown. He’s currently an associate at Caplin & Drysdale, the elite D.C. tax boutique. If the Cosmo contest were based on academic and professional credentials, Ojutiku would be tough to beat.

But it’s not. Instead, the winner will be picked by reader votes. So if you’d like to help a brother lawyer out, go here and select “Washington D.C. Bachelor” from the dropdown menu.

Good luck, Yemi! Take home that prize, and send America a message: Tax lawyers are hot!!!

P.S. If you need to be convinced that Yemi Ojutiku deserves your vote, watch this short dance video, in which he goes head to head with other (shirtless) bachelors. He’s clearly the best of the bunch when it comes to busting a move.

P.P.S. Personally speaking, Ojutiku isn’t my type — I prefer the skinny, pale, nebbishy look, while he is more beefcake, muscular and dark — but I do recognize that he’s a very handsome man.
