NYU’s ‘Party Law’ SBA President Strikes Again

We're coming towards the end of Party Law's reign (I assume we're nearing the end; not that I want that, I wish Party Law could be elected President of the NYU SBA for life). Perhaps he's trying to exercise a little dead-hand control over the SBA? Let's see who Party Law is trying to squash now...

Here’s what the embattled SBA president has to say for himself:

Hi Occupy Something,

At some point, I have to question both your morals and your ethics here, as you and I literally had this conversation yesterday, and Ineffective Lawyer and I have had this conversation, but since you and several other students seem inclined to continually drag the school, the SBA, and such through the mud on Ineffective Lawyer’s behalf here – I’m going to give you exactly what you and Ineffective Lawyer have asked for – a very public response. As I mentioned previously, we had declined to do so because it didn’t behoove anyone to make a student look bad, but since I believe you have crossed the line to the point where you are tarnishing the reputation of our students, alumni, and school, I will now respond. As Ineffective Lawyer stated the majority of these facts in his previous Coases email, I doubt we will have much to argue about.

The requirements for running for a position on the SBA are very, very easy to meet – a candidate simply has to fill out an application, collect a certain number of signatures, and may choose to submit a personal statement and picture. If you have trouble remembering these guidelines, you can look for them in the SBA Constitution and the Election Rules that were given to all candidates – where they are spelled out quite clearly for those inclined to read them or who actually see an application prior to it being turned in on their behalf.

Moving on to the current matter at hand, let’s review the facts as set forth by Ineffective Lawyer, and include a few other things as well that seem to get left out….

[blah blah blah]

However, in light of the fact that everyone else managed to follow the rules, the fact that Ineffective Lawyer had managed to do this correctly in the two prior elections he lost, and that there was a complaint filed regarding his candidacy, the Elections Committee decided to follow the rules and Constitution as it applied to every single candidate. He also failed to indicate in any manner that he wanted to correct any of the issues, instead blaming those who had turned in the application for him.

The hypocrisy of this entire argument is not lost upon me, as Ineffective Lawyer has previously written to the Elections Committee in prior years attempting to get a candidate removed for forwarding an email instead of cc’ing it – as he expressed concern that this would violate the integrity of the process.

Speaking only for myself, I believe that allowing a single person an exception to every single rule because it was not important enough for them to take the time to fill out an application, collect their own signatures, or personally meet any other requirement regarding the elections is unmerited and would violate the integrity of the elections. Further, I think that in light of Ineffective Lawyer’s previously expressed desires to maintain the integrity of the process, it is time for him to accept responsibility and ownership for his actions (or lack thereof).

You’ve attempted to use this as way to enflame public opinion, continually attacking the SBA, the Elections Committee, and its processed. You and certain others have disseminated statements that are distorted, misleading, and lacking in factual basis. I find this behavior abhorrent.

Let me again state this for the record for anyone that cares to read a Coases post – the SBA is here to help all students – it is a representative body that supports every student as best as it can, and helps where requested.

We are all students here, and there are great ways to work together to achieve positive change. Instead of wasting time and energy pointing the finger and making accusations, distorting the truth, and attempting to explain to me why someone shouldn’t have to follow the same rules as everyone else, I encourage you to focus your efforts in that direction. The students at this school should be working together for change, not fighting over one person’s unwillingness to take personal responsibility for their actions.

Beyond that, warmest wishes to all the candidates who have ran positive campaigns.

Warmest regards,
Party Law

The next NYU Law SBA president should be appointed by Dean Richard Revesz, Gladiator-style:

REVESZ: When was the last time you saw the law library?
DISCIPULUS LEGIS: Two years, two hundred and sixty-four days this morning.
REVESZ: I have one more task for you. You must lead the NYU SBA into a new era. Do you accept this mighty honor?
DISCIPULUS LEGIS: With all my heart, no.
REVESZ: Oh, Discipulus, that is why it must be you.
