When You Know You’ve Given Up On Law School

A law student takes a one-liner from a cult TV show and turns it into an academic exploration of awesomeness.

When senioritis strikes a 3L — 3L-itis, if you will — the resulting supernova of over-education and apathy can puncture the very walls of academic reality. It’s what decides that “_____ and the Law” is a sound formula for valuable legal education, that (non-tax) LL.M.s are a sound investment, or that crowning oneself as the school’s Interim Director of Admissions is a can’t miss résumé enhancer that the school will in no way catch.

But it’s also what compels a student to draft a scholarly epic based off an in-joke spawned by a throwaway one-liner in a cult favorite TV show. This is why 3L-itis, capable of so much ruin, has such capacity for beauty.

Remember that Charlie Kelly of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia fancies himself a lawyer despite being illiterate. It’s a brilliant comedic premise unless you’re an executive from Infilaw, in which case it’s a business model.

On one Tuesday at 11:30 a.m., Charlie explained that “Bird Law, in this country, is not governed by reason.”

For the show’s writers, this was probably just one more in the litany of insane Charlie-isms. But the Internet took off and ran with it:

Like this Imgur post entitled “I’m just saying bird law in this country isn’t governed by reason.”

I’m just saying bird law in this country isn’t governed by reason

Or this one entitled “Bird Law,” featuring the greatest Tinder exchange that doesn’t involve “wanna f**k?”:

But a law student — who we really hope is a 3L — has taken this to an all new level.

This raises the most important question: Was Professor [REDACTED] in on the joke? Did the professor ever figure it out?

Now what exactly is this paper about? We don’t have the full paper, but based on the first page it looks like the author is going to finally resolve Dennis’s core question: can you keep a hummingbird as a pet? Read the first page of the paper on the next page.

For the record, this is exactly the kind of genius scholarly work I’d love to get a short write-up of for the upcoming Above the Law Review.
