The Circuit: Avoiding July Heat Waves

Here are some excuses to escape the heat and humidity and grab a plane to San Francisco.

The Circuit by Monica Bay - main imageWhen July arrives, I really miss San Francisco, where I grew up and spent half of my career before moving to New York City. I mostly miss San Francisco because it’s cold in July, thanks to the famous fog.

Yes, the traffic sucks. Yes, the hotels (and real estate) prices are insane. Yes, everyone is way too precious about their food. But I would put up with all of that—and more—to spend every July in the City by the [San Francisco] Bay. I like frigid in July. And San Francisco has a wonderful stadium, AT&T Park. (Yes, I earned many “Croix De Candlestick” pins for staying to the end of extra-inning Giants night games.)

So here are some excuses to escape the heat and humidity and grab a plane to SFO to rack up some continuing legal education.

PRACTISING LAW INSTITUTE

July 14-15: “Basics of Accounting for Lawyers 2016: What Every Practicing Lawyer Needs to Know.” Live seminar. “Whether you’re a transactional attorney or a litigator, when financial and accounting records emerge in the legal matter you’re handling, it helps to know some accounting basics,” says the Practising Law Institute. “The numbers always tell a story—one that may support your legal position. Being able to recognize the relevant accounting principles at work and how they influence the outcome of your legal matter can only help you deliver a more complete analysis to prepare for litigation or close that deal.”

Here’s what you will learn, according to PLI:

• Understanding Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
• Generally Accepted Auditing Standards (GAAS)
• The Accounting Cycle
•How to read:
> The Balance Sheet
> The Income Statement
> The Statement of Cash Flows
> The Notes to the Financial Statements
• How lawyers can effectively use accountants as experts
• Recent regulatory changes and views from those impacted or involved in the changes
• Awareness of different accounting and reporting frameworks and requirements
• Ethical issues for attorneys and accountants

Another San Francisco PLI option: “Fundamentals of Patent Prosecution 2016: A Boot Camp for Claim Drafting & Amendment Writing” on July 6.

ABA & BASEBALL

The above are just a few of the excuses you can concoct to leave your steamy venue in July. But if you hesitate to return to your home town, you can always stay a bit longer in San Francisco—because the American Bar Association’s 2016 annual meeting will be in town from Aug. 4-9.
